Why It Is Good To Feel Pain

It’s a cutthroat attitude at first glance, but there is more to it.

Kerwin Rae is a renowned marketer and motivational speaker with a refreshing and raw personality. I have been following his journey for a long time now and take notes from many of his lessons. One that truly resonated with me was when he said, “I wish pain upon others”… something along those lines.

One of his subordinates approached him, upset and concerned about the well being of a fellow colleague, as she was at her limits. Kerwin’s response was that he wished pain upon others.

Whilst it seems like an insensitive approach especially saying it to someone who is distraught. These words demonstrate what an exceptional mentor he is.

Which is a more valuable friend, one who says you’re outfits always look good, or one who will tell you honestly if they think it’s bad?

Seek Discomfort

Kerwin has experienced a lot of hardship throughout his life, but he is where he is today because of it. A large Youtube channel “Yes Theory” have a motto, “Seek Discomfort”. They frequently put themselves in uncomfortable situations such as telling crushes they like them, confronting the fear of heights by jumping out of a helicopter or approaching strangers with various challenges with the intention of inspiring others to challenge themselves and to develop.

Often we don’t always get to choose our discomforts, as adversities tend to catch us off guard or build up over time. But they are a time of true self reflection, to see where you are at and how far you can go.

Challenges are the #1 way for us to grow as individuals. It’s like going to the gym, you can go have a “comfortable” workout — lift light weights, with few reps and lots of rest. Or you can go in there and bust your ass, pushing yourself to the limits. Which one do you think will yield the best results? and which approach do you think you’ll be the most proud of looking back at the journey.

Kerwin wants people to confront challenges as they are the best lessons life has to offer. They give individuals the opportunity to overcome fears, develop skills and strengths and to help the individual be more equipped to handle other (bigger) adversities later on.

Without adversity, we are comfortable and when we are in the comfort zone we are going nowhere.

As they say, if you’re the smartest in the room, you are in the wrong room. So surround yourself with those who challenge you if you want to be the best you can be.
